Welcome to Edition #17 of the World of Soccer Newsletter.

In this month’s newsletter, NSCAA staff instructor and college coach, Giovanni Pacini, tells us why he thinks the American Goalkeeper is among the very best in the world.

In the Boot Room we have a humorous look at the soccer “friendly” and all that brings with it.

And we get into the “Passing Game” rather than long “Dribbles” as we go for a three-in-one (rather than a 3 vs. 1) with a trio of comments about recent and upcoming events – the qualification games this week for Euro 2008; Seattle moving into the MLS; and Ruud Gullit bringing “sexy soccer” to the LA Galaxy.

You may have seen our two practices this month as we showed them before in our earlier newsletters, but here we are looking at how to introduce modifications and variations to prevent a good practice from becoming the “Same Old, Same Old.”

Hope you enjoy.Tony Waiters

Why the American Goalkeeper?

In the movie "Victory," a young American goalkeeper is heralded as a hero for making the spectacular penalty kick save against an evil German side. Who could forget the dagger eyes of Werner Roth as he tried to stare down the brave American goalkeeper in what was nothing more than a German propaganda scheme of a match? Hatch, played by Sylvester Stallone, made his way onto the prison camp soccer team because he a had a knack for stopping balls, not to mention that he saw it as a way of breaking out as well.

As we all know, he did get out; yet allowed himself to be re-captured so as to help the resistance cause. Good for the resistance and for the prison camp team as they had their stalwart American goalkeeper back "defending the pipes." Despite not knowing where to stand for a corner kick, Stallone - uh, Hatch - might have become our very first great American soccer goalkeeper. Certainly my tongue is firmly placed in cheek, but it does spark a bit of discussion relative to the predominance of world-class American goalkeepers on the international stage. Full Story

Short Passes

In my early coaching days I was once counseled by my staff instructor to give out information in short passes - not long, lazy dribbles. It was good advice. I continue to pass that on to all coaching candidates that come under my tutelage.

So this month instead of one long article, three shorter (Note: shorter - not short) passes. Euro 2008 The hot topic for a while has been, will England make it to Euro 2008? Only if Russia fails to win in Israel and the England beats Croatia at Wembley a few days later. So the knives are being well sharpened for Steve McClaren and much has been written about why would he bring back David Beckham who has been injured for weeks - months - and is playing exhibition games as his preparation for what could be the most important game in England's recent history.

Boot Room Archive

Joe

As a bona fide alumnus in the 70’s of the original Boot Room at the mighty Liverpool Football Club, in each newsletter we will include one article from today's World of Soccer Boot Room. I think you will find these articles pretty informative, but more importantly, you will have a chuckle. Hey! If you don’t think that’s important, go sit in your closet for two hours and see how much fun that is.

This month's article is called: When is a "Friendly" Not a Friendly!
