    CHRISTMAS STORIES for the HOLIDAYS

Welcome to Edition #18 of the World of Soccer Newsletter.

So much of Christmas is about family and with family come stories of days gone by.And that’s what we are going to do this month -

We’re also going to have a FEAST, but this one is a soccer feast.

With our two practices, first we will look at crossing and shooting for teenage players. It’s the stuff of the game and provides the most excitement. For younger players we make a few suggestions for that old standby that always works – soccer relays. Some of you may have caught this recent story about Man U, the Munich Air Disaster and the Busby Babes. If you haven’t it is worth the read. Click HereHave a great Christmas and we’ll see you in the New Year.Tony Waiters

Christmas Story #1

It was Christmas 1959. It was my first year as a pro, but had not yet played for the first team.

At that time all clubs in the English Football League played back-to-back games - Christmas Day and Boxing Day - usually against a local rival. As a reserve player I was allowed to go home for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day; the proviso being if I was needed for the Boxing Day game they would give me a call on Christmas Day evening. By 7:00 p.m. no call had been made, but my long-time friends in the village I was brought up in did come a-calling. Full Story

Christmas Story #2

Christmas 1962. By this time games on Christmas Day were no longer on the schedule.

We were allowed to go back home - providing it wasn't too far from Blackpool. The day after Christmas - Boxing Day - we had a home game and we were to report to a Blackpool hotel for the pre-game meal and a team discussion.

Give Your Players a Feast

The challenge for the soccer coach - any coach - is making the practice enjoyable while at the same time helping the development of skills. So we are suggesting there is a need to give the players a feast.

F - is the "F" word we should not have a practice without. "Fun" has to be at the core of practice for players of all ages and all levels - including the pros. E - is for "Everyone Included." No standing in lines or hanging about. Boredom and misbehavior are partners in crime. "E" is also for "Equal Time" and "Equal Opportunity" - particularly for the younger players. OK! In the World Cup and the Olympics equal time and opportunity cannot be factored in, but 7-year olds kids....!

Boot Room Archive

Joe

As a bona fide alumnus in the 70’s of the original Boot Room at the mighty Liverpool Football Club, in each newsletter we will include one article from today's World of Soccer Boot Room. I think you will find these articles pretty informative, but more importantly, you will have a chuckle. Hey! If you don’t think that’s important, go sit in your closet for two hours and see how much fun that is.

This month's article is: Christmas Story #3
