Welcome to World of Soccer Newsletter #9. In this month’s newsletter – something old; something new.
What’s new? The announcement a couple of weeks ago about the revival of a women’s professional league in the United States. Will it happen? If it doesn’t, it’s going to be extremely difficult for the United States to maintain its position in the top three of the world.
The old? Two things. The old NASL which had some good ideas and then some not-so-good. Go to the Boot room for a bit of a chuckle.
Also, we have guest writer Gordon Waddell of the Scottish Sunday Mail lamenting the demise of old-fashioned wingers. I think you will find the article very interesting.
And then there is today. Two practices for tonight’s practice – either on the field or in the gym. If it is in the gym, better tell your players to bring their knee pads as the King’s Court practice is a fun introduction to side diving for all young players from 6-12 years of age. Who knows who will be a goalkeeper, striker, midfielder, or a winger!...at 7, 8 or 9 years of age.
We’ve added the Insta-Bench to our line of products at the request of coaches. All we can say if you get one for your team, please do not have any reserved seats for your lesser players.
Chance Fry, the former Seattle Sounder, was one of the key developers of this excellent and innovative piece of soccer equipment. Go to Wikipedia - Chance Fry to find out more about Chance. His career is a fascinating roller coaster. He was caught in a soccer time warp. His best playing years came after the demise of the NASL and before the MLS established itself. What he did gain was a goldmine of soccer experience and this is reflected in his soccer work today.
Please send your comments. It helps to shape the newsletter.

We Had Our Wings Clipped
By Gordon Waddell, Sunday Mail
PEOPLE say they're born, not bred. That it's a gift, not a trade. But I just don't buy it.
And I don't care if we have to clone the bastard son of Arthur Graham and John Robertson to do it. But we need more Chris Burkes in our life - and we need them NOW.
I'd almost forgotten what it felt like. Sitting in the gantry in the front of the main stand at Ibrox (Rangers stadium), watching Burke take the ball in the opening minute the other night, square up his shoulders and just go.
You know the feeling? Where your seat's not quite taking your weight any more.
Where you're an inch off it. It's the balls of your feet pushing you up, your quads suddenly doing the work for your backside.
And you find yourself whispering: "Go on, RUN at him. Take him on. TAKE him on."
Course you know the feeling. You just don't remember it.
One of the most welcome announcements made towards the end of last month was the proposed re-establishment of a professional women's soccer league in the United States.
The US women have led the world since the inception of the Women's World Cup in 1991 (China). Other countries - particularly in Europe - have been playing catch-up and many now have a league of their own.
For me, the biggest set back to women's soccer in America came with the cancellation of the WUSA league in 1993 after only three years of operation.
The W-League picked up the pieces, but only to a certain extent. Without a fully-fledged women's pro league, other countries are already catching up, and at this year's World Cup in China we'll see how many, if any, have gone past the US.
As a bona fide alumnus in the 70’s of the original Boot Room at the mighty Liverpool Football Club, in each newsletter I will include one article from today's World of Soccer Boot Room. I think you will find these articles pretty informative, but more importantly, you will have a chuckle. Hey! If you don’t think that’s important, go sit in your closet for two hours and see how much fun that is.
This month's article is called The North American Soccer League Was Not All Bad
I made a bit of a Boo Boo in the Practice Section of the February Newsletter. The 4-Goal Game appeared for the second time (previously in the October edition). I did check, but missed the October practices. Anyway, I’m only semi-apologizing as it is a practice I developed myself in my Liverpool days and it is a good fun, all-action activity. So as good coaches should, it doesn’t do any harm to reinforce things. Having said that, it will not occur again.
This month, we follow in the vein of previous newsletters – one practice for the coaches of our younger player (6 – 11) and one for the older players (12 and upwards).
