Welcome to Edition #21 of the World of Soccer Newsletter.

It gave me no pleasure to see England eliminated from Euro 2008 last year. As an ex-Brit and a former England national team player you cannot change what is in your blood. It was therefore, refreshing to see that England appears to be about to wake up and perhaps regain what was always theirs – until they let it slip 20, 30, 40, 50 or more years ago.

Styles of Play is a fascinating, albeit somewhat nebulous subject. We look at it from a club and coach viewpoint, but then Tim Vickery, a writer and broadcaster for the BBC, who is based in Brazil, brings an insightful perspective on Brazilian vs. English soccer to give some rationale to “Styles of Play.”

This month in the Practice Section we are going to look at the “Team” consideration.

For a 6-year old, two’s company, three’s a team.

But for 16-year olds, the game format means that 11 of your players are on the field of play supported by the rest of the squad on the bench. In these circumstances the “team” becomes a much more complex situation.

Hope you enjoy and please let us know your comments – negative and positive.Tony Waiters

Styles of Play

In the last little while, at the World of Soccer offices, we have been getting ourselves ready for the launch of our new Byte Size Coaching platform (we have a tentative date - April 15th).

As part of the upgrade of the U13 - U18 section I have been looking at that controversial area - Systems of Play. Everyone is looking for soccer's "magic bullet" in the hope that it will transform their ordinary team into world beaters. If we are honest with ourselves, we all know there is no such thing. But the quote that "the team performance should be greater than the individual parts" says it all. Not sure where the quote came from. Sounds like Lombardi, but I was unable to confirm that. Wow! Where have England been these past 20 or 30 years?

Recent research from the England really tells you why the English, who invented the modern game, are now struggling when it comes to World Cup and European Play(Click here for link) .

They've suddenly realized that young players are not being exposed to the right environment as they were by happenstance 50 or more years ago when England was the recognized powerhouse of the game. It has taken them a long, long (lost) time to discover that. In 1988, Bobby Howe, then the Director of Coaching of the Washington State Youth Soccer Association, later to be the DOC of the United States Soccer Federation, and I wrote a manual called "Coaching 6, 7 & 8 Year Olds." At that time, as differently than today, very few children were starting to play soccer earlier than those ages.

Boot Room Archive

Joe

As a bona fide alumnus in the 70’s of the original Boot Room at the mighty Liverpool Football Club, in each newsletter we will include one article from today's World of Soccer Boot Room. I think you will find these articles pretty informative, but more importantly, you will have a chuckle. Hey! If you don’t think that’s important, go sit in your closet for two hours and see how much fun that is.

This month's Article is called: Soccer - The Official Language?
