May Day (May 1st) is celebrated and recognized as the International Workers’ Day and is one of the biggest public holidays world-wide.
Mayday repeated three times is the international distress call that originated from the French expression “venez m’aider†– “come to my aid.â€
None of which applies to us because we are still in the month of April. Around these parts we don’t recognize month’s with less than 31 days. So as far as the April edition of the Byte Size Coaching Newsletter is concerned it is April 31st. Just joking. We are just a tad late in publishing.
Welcome to the April 2008 Byte Size Coaching Newsletter.
In the April edition of our World of Soccer Newsletter we highlighted college athlete’s scholarships and what was good and not-so-good about them.
Marc Cadden, a former board member of SAY Soccer (Soccer for America Youth), responded to the article. Marc has had two children go through the system – both getting some sort of scholarship.
I think you will find it interesting.
Elsewhere in this article, I highlighted our new Byte Size Coaching partners, the Calgary Minor Soccer Association and their symposium two weekends ago. John Walker, the women’s soccer coach of the highly successful University of Nebraska program, presented on the topic of athletic scholarships. With his permission, we’re including his PowerPoint presentation. You may have to fill in the blanks somewhat as this is what John used to support his verbal presentation.
Hope you Enjoy and would appreciate your feedback
Tony
Soccer Scholarships
I was taken by your article "Soccer Scholarship Chase: Fact & Fiction." As a father of two scholarship athletes in two different sports, I thought I might offer some feedback that I hope may be useful.
Some basics first:
1. Forget full scholarships. If you are 7'2" and have a good move to the hoop, or have 4.3 speed and a 5% or lower fumble rate, you're in; otherwise, be realistic and happy with at least playing. 2. NCAA Division I is what everyone sees and talks about, but scholarships are available from Div II and Div III (non-athletic, but coaches have some input to the school's academic processes in some cases). Also, NAIC is free of NCAA and many good schools are in NAIC. My point is that if a good student has maintained athletism and kept up their skills, they have a good chance to play somewhere, as long as they are flexible.
This month we feature the Calgary Minor Soccer Association. CMSA have just joined us as one of our Byte Size Coaching partners and we are delighted to be working with them.
In actual fact, the relationship between CMSA and World of Soccer goes way back as the CMSA has using some aspects of our programming for several years.
The Byte Size Coaching will be sponsored by Shane Homes, a leading residential home builder in the greater Calgary area.
It is no coincidence that Shane Wenzel, the senior vice president of sales and marketing, just happens to be a coach in the CMSA programs. And it is no coincidence that his company called Shane Homes is named after Shane (he was 6-years of age when his father, Cal, started the company.)
We've said it before in an earlier newsletter that Rod Stewart told us in his hit Never Give up on a Dream (Rod Stewart, Bernie Taupin, Jim Gregan) "You've got to have heroes to teach us all to never give up on a dream."
MLS is bringing us heroes, the United States and Canadian Women's teams are doing their part and we'll see more of that in the Beijing Olympics this summer.
FC Toronto is playing to sell-out crowds at BMO field - a Canadian oasis in an otherwise almost barren Canadian soccer scene.
