Welcome to the May 2008 Edition of Byte Size Coaching Newsletter.
Next week we will send a link to all of our Byte Size Coaching partners giving them access to our new 1-hour distance learning program. It is packed full of simple, but effective guidelines and advise for the new soccer coach. And while we were at it we included a few chuckles and poked fun at ourselves at the same time. Why not? If you can’t laugh at yourself, you’re not entitled to laugh at someone else.
Water! Water! Everywhere! Nor any drop to drink.
So said the Ancient Mariner, but as soccer coaches we better make sure there is plenty of drinkable water. It is the lifeblood of the game.
JR Justesen, Director of Goal-Tek Innovations Ltd., one of our associates, writes about the importance of hydration. The article is a must for every soccer coaches at every level.
This month we feature another of our Byte Size Coaching partners, Coquitlam Metro-Ford Soccer Club and in particular, Technical Director, Sara Maglio. Soccer is a small world and you will find out how and why in this feature.
Hope you Enjoy and would appreciate your feedback

New Online Program
Finally we are underway with the upgraded Byte Size Coaching program. We've set a "soft" launch date for Mid-June with the goal of having everything working well in advance of the fall season.
In the meantime we have completed the new Online Learning Program for First-Time Soccer Coaches. This was built as a result of one of our BSC clubs - Cliff Avenue - saying it was something they would really like to have. Ron Cuthbert, a director of the Cliff Avenue United Soccer Club (who just happens to work for INSINC, our web casting partner) was the person who got us going.
Sara Maglio Technical Director Coquitlam Metro-Ford Soccer Club
This month we feature Sara Maglio, the Technical Director of the Coquitlam Metro-Ford Soccer Club, which is located in the Greater Vancouver area.
Sara's background in soccer makes her one of the most qualified female coaches in North America.
Sara Maglio signed on to the Vancouver Whitecaps in 2001. During her time with the Vancouver Whitecaps the 2004 women's team was inducted into the British Columbia Sports Hall of Fame and Museum, led by Coach Chris Bennet. The Women's Whitecaps 2004 team finished at the top of the W-League beating out New Jersey at the 2004 Championship on penalty kicks. The Whitecaps became the first Canadian side to win a W-league title and the first elite women's team from Vancouver to be crowned North American Champions. Sara also played for the Canadian Women's team.
The Ancient Mariner may have had his problems getting drinking water, but soccer players better not.
This article from one of our associates, Goal-Tek, takes a comprehensive look at the necessity to keep soccer players – of all ages and stages – properly hydrated.
Every soccer coach should be aware of the problems that can occur if this area of player care is not thoroughly addressed.
At this time of the year particularly, as temperatures around the United States and Canada begin to soar, we need to have a hydration plan just as much as an 11-a-side team needs a system of play.
