Welcome to Edition #27 of the World of Soccer Newsletter.

Learning the Tricks of the Trade is what we all have to do in every walk of life and soccer is no different.

In the Boot Room we again look at one of the Legends of the Game – Sir Stanley Matthews who drew this accolade from the Great Pele; "The man who taught us how the game should be played.”

A change of direction in the practice section where we now look at some development games that a player can do on his/her own or with a friend. The time has come in North America for players to take responsibility for improving themselves and not being ever-reliant on the coach. But the coach can set “Homework.” Or should that be “Funwork”?

Like Naked Gun, our Communication Series only moves up half-a-notch because we were unable to find some of the answers we are looking for. But we do identify the problem areas.

Finally, World Cup Qualification for South Africa 2010 was the talking point and viewing point for all soccer aficionados last week.

For this fan, it was two wins and one loss – and the loss is hard to take.

Hope you enjoy and please let us know your commentsTony Waiters

Communication Part 1 & a Half

We said in the last World of Soccer Newsletter (August 2008) that we would do a 3-Part Series on communications within soccer.

Well this is Part 1 and a Half. Why? Because in my research since the last newsletter I haven't been able to come up with any really pertinent information. It seems that it is almost impossible to know that messages sent out - electronically, by voice mail, etc. - cannot be accurately monitored 100% to know that the recipient of the message has actually received it and read or listened to it. Yes! You can request a "receipt" of the Email or notification that it has been "read," but that's about it. Then there is the issue of privacy. Even if it was possible to do that there would be a major furor if "Big Brother" was able to watch over you. Full Story

World Cup 2010

Last week was a good one for me ,if two out of three is seen as good.

Because of my background and my allegiances the first national team results I first look for are England, the United States and Canada - and not necessarily in that order. In the World Cup qualifying games for South Arica 2010 England has started well and love them or hate them, their absence from a World Cup (or the European Nations Cup) takes out an element of interest and quite often, of controversy, too!

Boot Room

Joe

As a bona fide alumnus in the 70’s of the original Boot Room at the mighty Liverpool Football Club, in each newsletter we will include one article from today's World of Soccer Boot Room. I think you will find these articles pretty informative, but more importantly, you will have a chuckle. Hey! If you don’t think that’s important, go sit in your closet for two hours and see how much fun that is.

This month's Article is called: Tricks of the Trade

Practices
In the Practice Section this month we take a change of direction. We look at a development game that a player can do on his/her own or with a friend. The time has come in North America for players to take responsibility for improving themselves and not being ever-reliant on the coach. But the coach can set “homework.” Or should that be “Funwork”?
