Welcome to Edition #28 of the World of Soccer Newsletter.
This month the newsletter has a distinctly Canadian flavour – even with the spelling!
Joe Sawer, Director of Operations of the North Shore Soccer Development Centre in Vancouver, British Columbia and Steven Spence, a coach with the Ottawa Fury, a club with teams in the W League, the PDL and the Super-Y Leagues of the United Soccer League, are featured in two of our articles.
With Canada licking its wounds after an early exit in the men’s World Cup Qualifications for 2010, it is the likes of Steve and Joe who will help develop the World Cup players of the future. Canada must do a complete overhaul of the development and competitive system in the country if it is to have any chance at the men’s level in future years. The North Shore Soccer Development Centre – there’s that spelling again – the Ottawa Fury and similar organizations will be the foundation to build upon.
Steve’s article is about formations (systems) and about the Principles of Play. So we have stayed with that theme in the Practice Section where we recommend 3 practice game formats that help develop on understanding of the Principles of Team Play.
Joe Sawer, a rabid supporter of Everton FC for 51 years, says he has earned the right to give World of Soccer permission to reprint the article from the Everton website. The article goes back in time to 1934 when Everton went on tour outside of the UK – almost unheard of in those days.
I would love to be back in the Boot Room at Liverpool FC and have Bill Shankly, Bob Paisley, Joe Fagan and Ronnie Moran brought into the 21st Century to discuss my article on the modern-day high-yield of goals from Free Kicks. I’m sure there would be much discussion and likely, some disagreement. Please read it because I think many of today’s free kick goals can be prevented. I would be delighted to get your opinions.
Hope you enjoy and please let us know your commentsTony Waiters
Formation? Schmormation!
Is it my imagination, or are we today placing far more importance on a team's formation? Coach's banter seems to jump right to these three magical numbers. It's often fancied up and called "Systems of Play" (SoP), but in most cases it's still just a plain old ‘formation'.
In my humble opinion, too much emphasis on formation usually means not enough time on the basics. This is dangerous because we all know you cannot build a solid house on a weak foundation (apologies for the overused metaphor). Why spend countless hours trying to get 13 year-olds to master a new formation, when few of them can jockey properly, and most don't understand the difference between second and third defender responsibilities? A formation cannot compensate for weak skills any more than a house framed with steel can compensate for that inadequate foundation. Full Story
A Summer In The Canaries
Nowadays pre-season tours are part and parcel of the football calendar.
This summer saw Everton travel to both Switzerland and America in search of both form and fitness. But the Club's ventures into the wider world began a lot earlier than you may think. Indeed, in 1934 an Everton team including the great Dixie Dean became the first English team to make what was then regarded an adventurous voyage to Tenerife. Like its tourism industry, football in the Canary Islands was growing in popularity year on year. The result was a steady improvement in standards, but difficulties in travelling to the mainland prevented clubs from participating in a national league.
As a bona fide alumnus in the 70’s of the original Boot Room at the mighty Liverpool Football Club, in each newsletter we will include one article from today's World of Soccer Boot Room. I think you will find these articles pretty informative, but more importantly, you will have a chuckle. Hey! If you don’t think that’s important, go sit in your closet for two hours and see how much fun that is.
This month's Article is called: Free Kicks and Monty Python's Flying Circus
In our Practice Section we usually put in two practices – one for younger players between 6- and 11-years of age; the second for players 12 and upwards who are now about to enter into or are already playing 11-a-side soccer.
This month we look at the Principles of Play and how an understanding of them can be developed in three games-based practices.
